SUMMARY:Understanding Trauma Presentation and Coercive Control in Child Custody Proceedings
DESCRIPTION:Exposure to domestic violence is a leading cause of adverse childhood experiences. Research confirms that allegations of domestic violence and child abuse are often discounted when raised in child custody litigation\, even when credible claims of abuse are presented to fact finders. This 2-hour workshop presented by representatives from Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence (SPAN)\, will provide training in identifying and understanding the nuance present in families experiencing domestic violence. The workshop will also discuss ways in which a trauma-informed lens can lead professionals who are involved in child custody proceedings to a deeper understanding of coercive control and the traumatic effects of family violence on children\, adults and families. \n*This course is designed to address the new domestic violence training requirements for court-appointed professionals in House Bill 21-1228. Participation certificates will be available. The BIDC has also submitted this course for CLE credit. Attorneys and mental health professionals are welcome.
